The Statue of King Kamehameha I was erected in front of the Aliʻiolani Hale in honor of Hawaii’s first monarch. Reserve a Honolulu City tour with us and see this noble piece of art.
The first Hawaiian king was considered a formidable fighter, diplomat and courageous leader. If not for him, the Hawaiian Islands would not be united as one. In 1810, King Kamehameha the Great led the Hawaii’s unification after long years of conflict. Such endeavor was very important because the islands under divided leadership might have been conquered by other competing nations.
Replicas of the Statue
Among the four commissioned statues of King Kamehameha I, the one standing in front of the Aliʻiolani Hale is the most distinguished. It is also considered as the most photographed landmarks in Oahu. This sculpture was created by Thomas Gould in Florence, Italy.
However, the statue in Aliʻiolani Hale is not the statue originally created from Europe but rather the second version. The first statue was lost near the Falkland Islands during its journey to Hawaii but later was found and was set up near King Kamehameha’s birthplace in North Kohala, Big Island.
The third replica of the statue was made in celebration of Hawaii’s statehood and its unveiling ceremony took place in 1969. It was placed at the U.S. Capitol together with the statue of Father Damien. Yet, it was then moved to its present position in Emancipation Hall. The fourth statue, created by Italian sculptor R. Sandrin, stands at the Wailoa River State Recreation Area near downtown Hilo in Big Island.
There are other replicas of the statue that are situated in various places like in the Grand Wailea Resort Hotel & Spa on Maui and even in Las Vegas where it was erected at the Hawaiian Marketplace.
Every 11th day of June, the people of Hawaii decorate the famous Statue of King Kamehameha I with flower leis in commemoration of their greatest king.
