On clear days, even the islands of Molokai and Lanai become visible. Because these offshore islets are wildlife sanctuaries, you will see Hawaiian seabirds; topic bird, frigate bird and more. It is recommended that you bring along binoculars as the area is an excellent place for viewing migrating humpback whales especially during whale watching season, usually from November to May.
Makapu’u Point lookout is within the Makapu’u Point State Wayside Park, a 38-acre area which also cover the Makapu’u Head and the historic Makapu’u lighthouse.
The Rabbit Island
Also see the volcanic tiff cone Rabbit Island. This area is originally a raising farm for rabbits but in 1994, these animals was taken out of the islet because they began to affect the natural breeding habitat of most seabirds. The area was also declared a protected sanctuary so landing on the island is prohibited without having valid permits.
