The Pu’u o Mahuka Heiau State Monument
Waimea Bay is just among many top beaches on the North Shore area. Here, visitors may also see the remains of Pu’u o Mahuka Heiau, an important historical site for the Hawaiians. The ruins are located on the hill top; and from there, the scenic beauty of Waimea Bay and Waimea Valley may be seen.
In 1962, the site was named as a National Historic Landmark and was considered as the center of the 4-acre Waimea Bay state park. Four years later, the site was also included to the list of National Register of Historic Places.
Waimea Bay Activities
Typically, the water along the Waimea Bay is generally peaceful and calm during the summer. However, this tranquility transforms into gigantic waves during the winter – perfect for surfing and some other water sports. Every year, the bay hosts several surfing events to entice both locals and tourists. Surfing contests are also done in other beaches on North Shore.
The Waimea Bay is also known for having the Quicksilver Big Wave Invitational to commemorate North Shore’s first life guard and surfing legend, Eddie Aikau. The said event is only being held if the waves along the bay are forecasted to reach between 30 to 50 feet high.
Aside from being a surfing paradise, Waimea Bay is also a popular spot for sunbathing and family picnics. However, visitors are advised to strictly observe all postings and warnings as the waves of Waimea Bay can be very dangerous especially for non-pro’s and children.
Meanwhile, visitors may also explore the nearby Waimea Valley, where the Waimea Falls is also located. Here, tourists may also see a botanical garden and some scheduled cultural attractions.
