Located on Oahu’s North Shore, is the world-renowned surfer’s destination, Sunset Beach. During summer months, waves in Sunset Beach can reach up to 15 – 20 feet, making it home to many local and international surfing competitions.
In 1984, The Quicksilver Big Wave Invitational was held in honor of Eddie Aikau (a well-known Hawaiian surfer and lifeguard). The Duke Kahanamoku Invitational was also held here until 1985. Sunset Beach is also home to the prestigious Vans Triple Crown of Surfing as part of the World Cup of Surfing.
Inexperienced surfers are advised to take caution. Sunset Beach, like many other beaches in North Shore is dangerous to amateurs due to the extensive formations of corals near the surface which can cause serious injuries. Surf fans however, are welcome to watch and take photos of professional surfers as they ride the giant waves.
Come summertime, the beach becomes calm enough for locals and tourists alike to swim and snorkel in the clear water.
Enjoy the sight of professional surfers braving Sunset Beach’s giant waves, or simply relax on the shore and watch other beach bums or sightseers exploring around.
